Millsboro Real Estate and Business Listings

Nestled on the Indian River in Sussex County Delaware, is the alluring town of Millsboro. This charming town was established in 1792 when a gentleman by the name of Elisha Dickerson built a damn that shut off the headwaters of the Indian River at Rock Hole. Elisha established a large saw mill as well as grist mill in town. These mills were two of the fifteen mills established in a four mile radius in the early 19th century. The name (at that time being Millsborough) applied to all of the land that was located on the north east side of the river, receiving it's name in 1908. The residents there adopted it as an alternative to the earlier 'Rock Hole Mills'. Another expanding community, located on the south west side of the river was called 'Washington'. It was in1837, when the two villages became a single community under Millsborough and shortly after, the name was shortened to what is now the towns official name, Millsboro. Other industries that promoted much growth to this land by the river was tannery, large shipments of cypress, as well as the charcoal businesses. In both the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as today, Millsboro's back bone is agriculture and lumber. In the 1930's the dominate crop was the broiler. In 1940, Townsend's INC. had become the nations first fully integrated poultry company.
