Welcome to Milton, Delaware!
|
A magical little town, nestled on the Broadkill
river in Delaware, settled by the English in 1672 is Milton. It is a quaint and
cozy and resembles a Victorian shipbuilding village. Several of the United Sates
governors were born in this tiny town as well as many officers who served in the
war of 1812. During the Civil War, the residents of Milton were not united in
their allegiances. Because of it's location being just a few short miles from
the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, Milton was an ideal place for
shipbuilders to live. Prior to 1812, Milton was renamed in honor of the English
poet John Milton. Much history can be found taking walks through the Milton
cemeteries with the headstones and markers of all the seafarers that died in
their service to our country in the Civil War. , Milton is known for once being
the "Holly Capital of the world". Being that Delaware's state tree is the
American Holly tree, it is no wonder that Milton produced more Christmas holly
than any other place in America. Following the wooden shipbuilding era, other
profit making business's that came into play were button making and agriculture.
One can find plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits in Milton as the farmers and
local gardeners still sell their delicious bounty throughout the town. Milton is
also known for its abundant production of soybeans, corn and broiler
chickens..
Besides all the history, magic and charm that this
enchanting town holds, there are many other alluring attractions that Milton has
to offer for both the young and old. Milton is a thriving community with many
romantically restored historic homes as well as many new up coming and growing
communities. This city is within minutes of many resort areas such as Rehoboth
Beach, Lewes and Ocean City, (which have wonderful eateries, shopping outlets
and the infamous Boardwalk.) Within the city, there is something for everyone. A
Brewery, (Dogfish Head Craft Brewery), Golf course, (The Rookery Golf Course)
and for the history buff, a museum, (The Milton Historical Society) .Milton
hosts plenty of antique shops, a delicious Pizza eatery, (Miltonian Pizzeria and
Wing house), a quaint coffee house, (Vintage Cafe and Bake Shop), the Milton
Theater and and for nature lovers, The prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge.
Because the Broadkill river flows through this little town, residents are privy
to abundant fishing from the river banks. Wagamon's Pond and Diamond pond offer
the best freshwater fishing with bass, pickerel and pan fish.
Milton is a wonderful place to raise a family, go
kayaking, enjoy concerts in the park and meet new friends. It is within a 100
mile radius of such beautiful and historic cities as Baltimore, Washington DC
and Wilmington.
