Milton, Delaware History - City Information

A magical little town, nestled on the Broadkill river in Delaware, settled by the English in 1672 is Milton Delaware. It is a quaint and cozy and resembles a Victorian shipbuilding village. Several of the United Sates governors were born in this tiny town as well as many officers who served in the war of 1812. During the Civil War, the residents of Milton Delaware were not united in their allegiances. Because of it's location being just a few short miles from the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, Milton was an ideal place for shipbuilders to live. Prior to 1812, Milton was renamed in honor of the English poet John Milton. Much history can be found taking walks through the Milton cemeteries with the headstones and markers of all the seafarers that died in their service to our country in the Civil War. , Milton is known for once being the "Holly Capital of the world". Being that Delaware's state tree is the American Holly tree, it is no wonder that Milton produced more Christmas holly than any other place in America. Following the wooden shipbuilding era, other profit making business's that came into play were button making and agriculture. One can find plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits in Milton as the farmers and local gardeners still sell their delicious bounty throughout the town. Milton is also known for its abundant production of soybeans, corn and broiler chickens..

Milton is a thriving community with many romantically restored historic homes as well as many new up coming and growing communities. A Brewery, (Dogfish Head Craft Brewery), Golf course, (The Rookery Golf Course) and for the history buff, a museum, (The Milton Historical Society) .Milton hosts plenty of antique shops, a delicious Pizza eatery, (Miltonian Pizzeria and Wing house), a quaint coffee house, (Vintage Cafe and Bake Shop), the Milton Theater and and for nature lovers, The prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge. Because the Broadkill river flows through this little town, residents are privy to abundant fishing from the river banks. Wagamon's Pond and Diamond pond offer the best freshwater fishing with bass, pickerel and pan fish.

Milton Delaware is a wonderful place to raise a family, go kayaking, enjoy concerts in the park and meet new friends. It is within a 100 mile radius of such beautiful and historic cities as Baltimore, Washington DC and Wilmington.
