Oak Orchard, Delaware History - City Information

Nestled upon the Indian River Bay, lies a very small, unincorporated community called Oak Orchard. This tiny neighborhood lies along Route 24 and Route 5, just west of the quaint area of Long Neck, Delaware. This eccentric area has been home of the Nanticoke Indian Tribe for 2,000 years and is also home to the Nanticoke Indian Museum. Still happening today is this tribes yearly powwow! Oak Orchard is also home to the Oak Orchard /Riverdale Post of the American Legion.

The remote community of Oak Orchard gives one the feeling of being out in the country, yet with all the advantages of residing upon the beautiful Indian River Bay. Close by is the city of Millsboro which offers residents and guests alike, many niceties of city life. For those who are connoisseurs of nature and outside activities, Millsboro offers two delightful ponds. Millsboro pond is is an ideal place to go and enjoy the cool breezes and warm sun especially during the season when the eagles roost! These eagle are spectacular to watch, both poised in the trees along the water and skyrocketing in the updrafts. For a pond that brings one an awe of lush, rich history and the beauty of swampland, Ingram's pond is the place to go. Bay Wood Greens Golf Course offers both pros and beginners a challenging, 18 hole championship course. The Emerald Greens is a golf course that is filled with natural beauty and preserved marshlands, gracing all it's visitors with a peaceful and serene game as they play amongst the stunning and captivating atmosphere. Also near to Oak Orchard is the lovely beach resort city of Rehoboth Beach where one can enjoy all the amenities that beach life has to offer. Rehoboth Beach has images so eye-catching and fetching, with it's sandy beaches, crashing waves, seagulls squawking and the warm, bright sun glistening on the vast Atlantic Ocean. It hosts the renown Boardwalk where one can stroll and enjoy slice of hot , cheesy pizza from Grotto's, salt water taffy or delicious old fashioned funnel cakes. For avid shoppers, Tanger Outlets offers over 130 name brand shops that are sure to grant every shopper their every need as well as desire!( Tax free at that!) For more eccentric tastes, downtown Rehoboth has classy and unique boutiques with many delightful eateries to stop into while enjoying hours of browsing.

Another neighboring city is the romantic, seafaring community of Lewes. In just one day, visitors to Lewes will be surprised to see how that in just such a short amount of time, such wonderful things can happen. Lewes offers it all! Lewes hosts a little bit of everything, from 4 star eateries, famous lighthouses, museums, historic homes, antique shops, parks and wildlife preserves and everything that beach life has to offer. For coffee lovers, Robson's coffee is a alluring coffee shop that will grace not only the coffee lovers taste buds, but just the aromas of freshly roasted coffee beans and newly baked pastries will warm each guests soul! For dining in a grandiose style, The Buttery in Lewes is a restaurant that will 'wow' each guest. Not only is the ambiance striking with it's Victorian style, but the cuisine is mouthwatering with superb American and International dishes that will beckon each guest to come back for more. The Buttery also offers scrumptious Sunday brunches with Veranda dining! The Lighthouse eatery, located on Fisherman's Wharf has a maritime atmosphere with delicious fresh seafood and a wonderful view of the water. After a great meal, a robust cappuccino or latte, one is fueled to go and visit Lewes' two famous Lighthouses. Both The Delaware Breakwatereast end lighthouse and Cape Henlopen lighthouse are most assuredly sights to go and see. Their history and captivating architecture are sure to bring awe to each visitor . Downtown Lewes has half a square mile that unveils all of the enduring history of Delaware's past. The historical district is filled with museums, Inn's, B&B's, restaurants, and shops. The Zwaanendael Museum as well as The Cannonball House displays Cape Henlopen's history as well as the story of the sinking of the ship H.M.S. De Braak. While strolling down the Ship Carpenters streets, be sure to visit 1700 Rabbit Ferry House and the Ryves Holt House, (Delaware's oldest house, named for the chief justice of the three lower counties in Delaware).

Oak Orchard is also within just  a few short hours of such magnificent cities as Baltimore, Washington DC, Annapolis, Wilmington and Philadelphia. This remote area on the river is a peaceful and serene community, close to so many wonderful areas of wealth, yet it gives one the feeling that  they are out in the country, where all the gifts of nature bring so much quiet beauty and serenity.
